Serrekunda Gambia

Serrekunda Gambia is the largest city in The Gambia. A combination of nine villages, it has a population of approximately 335,000 people. Much of the action in Serrekunda takes place in and around the city’s market. This mix of roadside stalls is a loud and busy place where you can buy all kinds of things, including shoes, handcrafted tables, t-shirts, and even hair extension plugs. You don’t have to purchase anything to benefit from a visit to the Serrekunda Gambia market, however. Just walking along the dusty streets and taking it all in can be an eye-opening, cultural experience that you won’t soon forget.

While Banjul is the capital of The Gambia, the fact that it is found on an island means that growth is limited. As a result of this geographical limitation, much of the growth of The Gambia has channeled into Serrekunda. Interestingly enough, Serrekunda Gambia was little more than a village just 20 years ago. As growth occurred, the town swallowed up a number of bordering villages. The relatively high rate of growth is partly to blame for Serrekunda’s lack of planned neighborhoods. For Westerners, this can be a bit of a culture shock. That’s arguably part of the joy that can be associated with Serrekunda visits, however. Quite simply, you won’t find any place like it close to home.

In addition to strolling through the market, tourists in Serrekunda Gambia can visit a batik factory, watch local wrestling matches, and duck into one of the city’s internet cafes for some time on the web. At the city’s batik factory, visitors can witness batiks and tie-dye materials being made. They can also shop for souvenirs. As for the local wrestling matches, they typically take place on Saturdays and Sundays. Wrestling, it should be noted, is a major sport in the region.

The city of Serrekunda links to various seaside resorts. As such, visitors can easily escape to the coast for some beach exposure. Among the seaside resorts of note near town are Bakau, Fajara, and Kotu. Accommodations are in good supply along the Gambian coast. Among the very best Gambia hotels is the Coco Ocean Resort and Spa. It is certainly one of the most luxurious lodging establishments in the country, offering excellent facilities and a wonderful assortment of guest units. Other standout hotels in Gambia include, but aren’t limited to, the Seafront Residence Hotel, the Mandina Lodge, and the Sheraton Resort & Spa.
