When To Go

Kenya Travel

There are several factors that might affect your decision of when to go on your Kenya vacation. For some, certain Kenyan events or festivals are the main aim, while others want nothing more than to relax on one of Kenya’s wonderful beaches. Of course, the main Kenya tourism draws are the safaris, and though there are better times to take a Kenyan safari than others, they can pretty much be enjoyed year round. The weather in Kenya is pretty consistent in each respective region, though there are rainy and dry seasons to consider. Whenever you choose to take your Kenya vacation, you are bound to enjoy a most satisfactory experience. Kenya is arguably one of the world’s best all around travel destinations, offering a range of possibilities that many other countries could only dream about offering.

The weather of Kenya is more affected by elevation changes than it is anything else. Temperatures here are quite temperate, and though it does get pretty hot here during what northerners know as winter, as you move your way into the highlands, it can be rather comfortable. July to August is when Kenya is at its coldest, but by no means does that mean you will be shivering, lest it be nighttime in the highlands perhaps. On the Kenyan coast, where you will find destinations like Mombasa, Malindi, and Lamu, it is warm year round, with average yearly temperatures wavering between 80-90 degrees. It also tends to be warmer in Kenya year round in and around the Lake Victoria region, which is found in western Kenya. Kenya’s desert north, which is usually not on the travel radar, is the hottest part of the country, and temperatures can get up over the 100's here. The coast can get quite humid, though during the day the ocean breezes help cool things off. Thankfully, the Indian Ocean is right there, plus plenty of Kenya beach resorts have swimming pools, not to mention air-conditioned rooms.

The main Kenya tourism season falls between the months of November and February. Though it’s hotter during these months, it is also drier. These are good months for Kenya tourism pursuits like climbing Mount Kenya or walking through the Kakamega Forest Reserve. As one might expect, when Kenya tourism is up, the rates at the hotels raise, and so does the price of flights. The wet seasons in Kenya, yes there are two, generally fall between April and June, and October and November. These aren’t the best times for travel to Kenya if you want to hit the game parks, as the conditions can limit the experience. One of the perks of visiting during the rainy seasons is that the prices at the Kenya safari lodges go way down.

After you’ve figured out the weather, you might think about aligning your Kenya vacation with one of the Kenyan events or festivals. The Mombasa Carnival, which is held in November, is a gem for those seeking out Kenyan culture. All the different ethnic groups of the country come to join the parades, donning wonderful costumes and building impressive floats. Should you be interested in experiencing what might be the top Kenya tourism attraction, you’ll plan your Kenya vacation for July/August, when the annual wildebeest migration is under way. Kenya events don’t get any better than this, and the best place to witness this migration of millions is at the renowned Masai Mara Game Reserve. Many a Kenya travel package features the wildebeest migration on its itinerary, and really overall, the Kenya travel package choices are just all around excellent. They are convenient and alluring, and often times, they save you a lot of money by bundling things like your airfare, meals, and accommodations together. Chances are that when you find a Kenya travel package that you like, it will help you ultimately decide when to go, which is just a little side bonus.
