Mauritius Beaches

Mauritius beaches are one of the most popular destinations on this lush vulcanic island, a small island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, is a country of diverse culture and beautiful scenery. With soft white sand, azure waters, great water sports and activities, as well as samplings of local culture, travelers do not even need to leave the beach resorts in Mauritius in order to have the experience of a lifetime on this tropical island.

One of the most popular destinations on the island is the northern tourist hotspot of Grand Bay. One of the most developed tourist resort areas in the country, Grand Bay boasts some of the best beaches in Mauritius, including Grand Bay Beach, Pereybere Beach, and Mont Choisy Beach. Grand Bay Beach has the most resort facilities and restaurants, and it is generally the most developed. This former fishing village has some of the best hotels and beach resorts in Mauritius, ranging from luxury villas to cheap bungalows, suitable for all budgets. Restaurants line the main street, which comes right down to the beach, and there is also a marina, which is the departure point for many water sports such as scuba diving and jet-skiing. The water here is shallow and suitable for swimmers of all levels, making it perfect for families on Mauritius beach holidays.

Nearby, the Black River Gorges National Park is a world-class hiking destination and will appeal to nature-lovers who want to explore its preserved natural rainforest, spectacular waterfalls, and wildlife. Near the Grand Bay Beach there are many other beautiful Mauritius beaches to explore, including the Mont Choisy Beach, the longest beach on the island, and popular Pereybere Beach, which has a deeper lagoon, making it the perfect spot for snorkeling around the coral reefs and kite-surfing, among other water sports.

Another popular beach destination is the Blue Bay Beach, on the eastern coast of the island. Known as one of the best beaches in Mauritius, the Blue Bay Beach lives up to its name with crystal-clear blue waters. Located close to the town of Mahebourg, the beach has some resort facilities, though the best beach resorts in Mauritius are still regarded to be at Grand Bay. Nevertheless, there are some hotels and villas nearby for those who wish to stay by the Blue Bay.

Surfers and outdoorsy travelers will want to head to Tamarin Bay Beach on the southwest coast of the island. Although the sand at Tamarin Bay Beach is not as fine and white as at other Mauritius beaches, the area makes up for it with splendid wild scenery. Here you can glimpse the volcanic mountains that first formed the island in prehistoric times and go for a hike in the forest. The Yemen National Park, through which the Tamarin River winds, is located nearby, with several ecotourism tours and safaris available for those interested in outdoor activities. The surf here is the island's best, with large swells coming through a break in the coral reef and making Tamarin Bay Beach one of the best beaches in Mauritius for surfing sports.
