As you arrive to the Seychelles on your flight,
you will land on the main island of Mahe,
where for many, it’s then off to Denis Island.
Denis Island Seychelles is one of Mahe’s satellite
islands, and it’s easy to arrange a trip here if
you haven’t done so before arriving. It is
a destination that is certainly worthy of inclusion in
your Seychelles vacation
itinerary, especially because it is both beautiful and
relatively easy to get to. You won’t find
much in the way of accommodation choices here, though
the Denis Island Lodge, which is the only Denis Island
lodging choice, should more than meet your wants and needs.
There’s so much to enjoy on Denis Island vacations,
which is a big part of why it’s a top Seychelles
destination. Of course, lounging around on a picturesque
beach is always part of the
plan, so you’ll definitely have to make room for
that.
Denis Island is just a short flight from Mahe Island, and you can also reach it by boat if you prefer to go that route. The island is named after a French explorer by the name of Denis de Trobriant, who caught his first glimpse of this slice of paradise in 1773. The history of Seychelles sees Arab merchants passing through as early as the 9th century, and it is assumed that these traders probably took notice of Denis Island during their travels. In the 17th and 18th centuries, pirates likely sought refuge on islands such as Denis Island, perhaps staging their next sieges and/or assaults. Supposedly, when De Trobriant landed at Denis Island in the 1700'’s, he buried a bottle that contained an Act of Possession document, though it has never been found. The French would be the first to settle Denis Island, and early French settlers began to introduce new crops, such as sugar. By the 1850's, it became an important coconut plantation, and fishing also helped to sustain the small island population. Denis Island would go on to become a private island in 1975, and its purchaser, Frenchman Pierre Burkhardt, would immediately transform it into a vacation destination. It has since been passed on to other hands, though little has changed here over time, which is music to travelers’ ears. Denis Island tourism is alive and well, but you’ll still enjoy the fact that much of the natural terrain here is left wholly unaffected.
The 350-acre Denis Island boasts a range of interesting
flora and fauna, and birdwatching enthusiasts will appreciate
native bird species such as whimbrels, wood pigeons, and
frigates. On Denis Island vacations, you can trek
about the various nature trails, which are really quite
excellent and fun to explore. Other ways to burn
calories on your Denis Island trip include windsurfing,
tennis, and canoeing. For those interested in culture
and history, a tour
of the island’s old village is a nice side endeavor
worth checking out. There are some houses that date
back to the 1930's at the old village, and it’s
also where the famed lighthouse is found. Swimming
in the beautiful turquoise waters and sunning on the soft,
white sand beaches is undoubtedly a top Denis Island tourism
pursuit, but if you want to enjoy the water even more,
you might look into doing a bit of scuba
diving or snorkeling. There is a PADI dive center
found here, and among the marine life you can expect to
see below the ocean surface are whale sharks, manta rays,
turtles, and dolphins.
Many folks who plan Denis Island vacations like to include a little, or a lot of fishing in the mix. You can certainly arrange a fishing charter during your Denis Island trip, and these deep-sea excursions will have you casting a line for tuna, wahoo, marlin, sailfish, and barracuda, among other species. Perhaps you are interested in Denis Island vacations for your upcoming honeymoon. If that is the case, you won’t be let down. The lodge here offers private and comfortable chalets and fine gourmet cuisine to boot. Plus, should you find your way to a secluded beach, it can make for the perfect romantic liaison. Denis Island vacations are a wonderful thing, so plan yours today and treat yourself to an oh-so-nice escape to paradise.
