The wonderful Seychelles island of La
Digue is home to many great attractions,
among them of which figures the Veuve Reserve. Though
it is a small reserve, it boasts the distinction of having
the only remaining population of Black Paradise Flycatchers,
which are also known as “Veuves”. There are
reportedly only about 100 of these rare birds in existence,
so anyone looking to do some birdwatching in the Seychelles
will certainly appreciate a visit to this enticing Seychelles
reserve. While those interested in touring the Veuve Reserve
can choose to visit the island of La Digue on day trips
from both Mahe and Praslin,
it’s advised that you consider spending at least
a few days here if you can, as the La Digue attractions
will do well to keep you occupied.
The Veuve Reserve is comprised largely of thick jungle,
and it’s primarily the aforementioned Paradise Flycatchers
that seem to attract the bulk of tourists. You don’t
have to be a birdwatcher to appreciate these rare creatures
that reside in the jungle of La Digue, where bodanmyen
and takamaka trees are prevalent. In recent years, the
population of these birds has increased due to reduced
human intervention, and as such, they are now considered
to be less endangered. Hiking
the trails through the Veuve Seychelles Reserve not only
affords the opportunity to view Paradise Flycatchers,
but also the chance to spot giant sea turtles and Swiflets,
which are another rare bird species. The Veuve Reserve
is managed by a staff that is based at the Veuve Information
Center. Staff members will be more than happy to accompany
visitors through the reserve, but you’ll have to
arrange the tour in
advance. Sometimes during these guided tours, visitors
will also get to trek some of the nature trails not found
within the reserve, which reveals more of the island’s
interesting flora and fauna. Word has it that the Veuve
Information Center plans to upgrade its facilities a bit,
offering more in the way of souvenirs and things the like.
The Veuve Reserve is certainly one of the more ideal
attractions in Seychelles
for those who love getting in touch with nature. The Vallee
de Mai Reserve, which is found on nearby Praslin Island,
is another one of the attractions in Seychelles that nature
lovers will want to consider, as is the Morne Seychellois
National Park on the main island of Mahe. Should your

have you spending the bulk of your time on La Digue Island,
the Veuve Reserve will be an ideal compliment to the other
La Digue attractions, which include the L’Union
Estate and the famed Anse Source d’Argent beach.
Trekking to the top of the 1,000-foot Eagles Nest Mountain
is a joy for hiking fans, and touring the coastline by
bike is a wonderful way to both sightsee and burn calories.
