Tanzania Beaches

The Tanzania beaches include some of the best strips of sand that you will find anywhere in Africa. The most appealing are found on offshore islands, though you don’t have to leave the mainland if you don’t want to. While there might not be much in the way of tourist development along the mainland coast, there are at least two beaches that deserve consideration when some fun in the sun is in order. These beaches are known as Ras Kutani and Amani.

The Zanzibar Archipelago is the destination of choice for travelers who are looking to spend some quality time on the beach during their Tanzania vacations. A trip to this island region can certainly make for an excellent complement to a Serengeti safari or a trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. On the main Zanzibar island of Unguja, glorious strips of sand can essentially be found all along the coast, though it is the beaches in the north, the east, and the southeast that tend to get the most visitors. This is largely due to the quality of the beaches themselves, of course. Amazingly soft sand meets the clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean along the Unguja coast, and palms are plentiful. It’s almost too good to be true, especially when you consider the snorkeling and diving possibilities, and if you wish to add to your Zanzibar Archipelago beach options, Pemba Island is only becoming more popular. It is also hard to find fault with the beaches on tranquil Mnemba Island.

Plenty of Tanzania beach hotels provide accommodation options for visiting beach enthusiasts. As far as the mainland beaches are concerned, the choices aren’t very prolific in number, though there are some delightful bandas (thatched roof huts of sorts) available at Ras Kutani Beach, and Amani Beach is home to an upscale hotel that offers watersport facilities to go with its other enticing facilities. As for the islands, there are some beach hotels on Pemba Island, and more are likely to be built as tourism increases. Over on the main island, or Unguja, the lodging selection is much more complete. In relation to cheaper Tanzania beach hotels, nothern Unguja’s Nungwi Beach is among the best places to find them. Also of particular interest are the beach hotels that hug the long and sandy east coast, and not far off the east coast, Mnemba Island offers one of Africa’s most romantic beach hotels. Add it all up, and there are Tanzania beach hotels to fit a healthy range of tastes and preferences.

Once again, the island of Unguja, or Zanzibar Island, as it is often referred to as, is where you will find the most abundant Tanzania beach lodging choices. As far as the resorts are concerned, the east coast is home to the reigning majority, and there are some choices in the north as well. Up and coming Pemba Island offers a few lodges and resorts of its own, so travelers who are interested in Tanzania beach resorts are encouraged to compare and contrast between the islands. Other options on top of that include the small lodges on Mnemba Island and Mafia Island. As a side note, Tanzania has a star rating system for its hotels in general. While a 4 or 5 star Tanzanian luxury hotel or resort isn’t likely to be as luxurious as a similarly rated accommodation in countries such as the United States and England, the traveler can expect quality nonetheless. Also, there are a good number of family friendly accommodations to select from, particularly in the resort department.
