Siem Reap Hotels

Siem Reap hotels have provided lodging near Angkor Wat since the complex became a monumental tourist attraction. It is the largest religious site in the world and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This influx of tourists and historical importance of the site have transformed what was a small, peripheral Khmer village into a thriving city with a host of modern accomplishments over the last couple of decades. As the closest city to Angkor, Siem Reap is undoubtedly the most tourist-worthy city in Cambodia, and the first of the Siem Reap hotels opened in 1929. The temple complex is magical, impossible not explore, and definitely a major draw - it is the number one reason people make the journey over the Thai and Vietnamese borders.

One might be surprised at the abundance of boutique lodging near Angkor Wat - pleasantly surprised. Several steps above higher end guesthouses and hotels comfort-wise (and much more interesting, too) Siem Reap boutique hotels are often set in prime locations along beautiful colonial streets first established by the French. Newer boutique hotels fringed by spas and crops of trendy bistros have established the city as a wonderful place to stay, and not merely as a base from which to explore Angkor fully. Boutique hotels are so varied, it’s best to look around to find your own personal favorite; they range in style from classic Khmer to sixties minimalist to artistic and Pop Art. Many do well with the typical minimalist, ultra-modern backdrop soaked in high art and lavish, exotic accessories.

Southeast Asia comfort scores high with discerning travelers - in Siem Reap visitors will get more than a taste of exotic luxury via several world class resorts. Expect elaborate facilities like tranquil spas, in-room massages, high-end cuisine, and gracious hospitality of course.  Most resorts are the closest lodging near Angkor Wat - within five miles from the temple complex and close to shops, markets, restaurants, and bars.

Siem Reap hostels might offer some excellent deals, especially out of high season, but city hostels offer the most consistent, inexpensive nightly rates, often with many conveniences including a great location within walking distance to scores of amenities. There are even several “upscale” hostels, claiming plenty of luxury – they are upscale comparatively but not anything like the 5-star hotels and resorts! The hostel scene in Siem Reap is as it is in most countries in the Southeast Asia region – you’ll find everything from coffin-sized rooms and dirty digs to exceptionally clean, bright, and bustling options. The key is to look around; don’t settle until you find something reasonable for the asking price. Most hostels offer common rooms for socializing, shared kitchens and laundry, internet shops, and guest services for tours, mainly to Angkor Wat. Many have a variety of rooms with 1-6 beds so traveling partners and groups can stay together for a lower price. For added convenience, try out one of the hostels around the corner from Pub Street for easy, quick access to loads of bars and restaurants.
