The Golden Temple Kunming is a very popular Yunnan Province tourist attraction. Reasons why it attracts so many visitors include its history and its beautiful design. In relation to history, this Daoist Chinese temple was built in 1671 during the rule of the Qing Dynasty. It served as a copy of another temple that dated back to 1602. As for the Golden Temple design, it is almost entirely cast in bronze and features such things as lovely lattice doors, complementary lattice windows, sturdy columns, and a double-eaved roof. It is truly a delight to behold, both inside and out.

For nearly 200 years after its completion date, the Golden Temple Kunming enjoyed a relatively undisturbed existence. That all changed with the Muslim rebellion of 1857, which saw the renowned structure suffering considerable damage. In 1890, Emperor Guangxu demanded that it be completely restored. During the restoration process, no less than 250 tons of bronze was used. Hence the name the Golden Temple. Visitors will notice that nearly everything is made of bronze, including Buddha statues and altars. Since the renovation of the Golden Temple was completed, it has been well cared for, and today, it is undoubtedly the most renowned shrine of its kind in all of Yunnan Province.
