Shangrila Songzanlin Monastery. This renowned Tibetan Buddhist Temple near Shangrila County was originally built in the late 1600s under the order of the Fifth Dalai Lama–Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso. While it had to be largely rebuilt in the 1980s, it nonetheless contains a large number of historic treasures and has plenty of historical value. Among the treasures that are housed inside the Songzanlin Monastery are colorful frescoes that relate to legendary Buddhist stories and a 26-foot statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. In this picture, the main halls of the monastery take center stage. You can also see visitors ascending the 146 steps that lead to the main entrance.
