Mekong River Hotels in Laos

Mekong River hotels in Laos can be found in the country's larger cities that are set on the river from its far northern tip and the borders of Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Thailand to the southern tip and the border near the Mekong River in Cambodia. You will be able to find some luxury hotels near the Mekong River in Laos in the five star range, but most Mekong River accommodation in the country suitable for most tourists will be good three and four star hotels.

One of the finest luxury hotels near the Mekong River in Laos is also located in Luang Prabang. This is the Orient Express La Residence Phou Vao (pictured), owned and operated by the company famous for its luxurious Orient Express trains as well as for world class five-star hotels and the small luxurious cruise ship Road to Mandalay that plies the waters of the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar. La Residence offers a full-service spa, fresh water swimming pool, gourmet dining, fabulous views of the river and ancient city, and deluxe rooms and suites.

The few other Mekong River hotels in Laos are located in the capital and largest city of Vientiane. The country's first five star hotel is the Lao Plaza, which offers all the facilities and amenities you might normally expect of a luxury city hotel including a full-service spa and fitness center, swimming pool, and several fine dining options. Another Mekong River accommodation in the same class and in the same neighborhood is the Settha Palace Hotel, located in a beautifully restored historic building dating to the 1934 colonial period. Also in Vientiane is the Don Chan Palace Hotel and Convention Center. This high-rise four star hotel has a great location right on the river with stunning views.

For budget travelers, some of the best Mekong River accommodation will be in small guest houses and family run bed and breakfast inns. These cater primarily to backpackers and hikers as well as those on cycling tours. These kinds of intimate Mekong River hotels in Laos provide opportunities for more authentic cultural exchange with the local people, and can often be lovely properties. An example is the Thongbay Guest House in set in beautiful gardens just outside of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang. Charming thatched and bamboo bungalows have verandas with river views and modern facilities.

Some hotels near the Mekong River in Laos will actually be in another country. This is especially true of the Golden Triangle area on the Mekong River in Thailand in the far north. Thailand has a more developed tourism infrastructure than Laos and, consequently, more hotels in this area that has been a popular destination for decades. Here you will find a number of small budget hotels as well as larger resorts. They are almost all located just across the river from Laos. This Golden Triangle region that includes the beautiful Thai cities of Chang Mai and Chang Rai is often the starting point for Mekong River cruises heading south. Because there are relatively few hotels in all of Laos, you will actually find that some "hotels" are, in fact, cruise ships.
