The Chiang Rai province is best known for its cultural and historical attractions. From the traditional hill-tribe villages near the Kok River to the Golden Triangle and Mae Fah Luang Cultural Park, Chiang Rai Thailand is a traveler's dream destination. Being the northernmost region, Chiang Rai is mostly mountainous and home to beautiful scenic views. It is located on the Kok River basin about 487 miles from Bangkok, and with an area of more than 4,000 square miles, the Chiang Rai province extends to the borders of Laos and Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). Although the region became the center of the Lanna Kingdom during the thirteenth century, it was well-settled as far back as the late seventh century. The Khun Chae National Park in the Wiang Pa Pao district is also a top destination for adventure enthusiasts; the park is best known for its campy atmosphere. Visitors interested in adventurous Chiang Rai travel will find several hilltops, cliffs, jungles, and beautiful waterfalls to explore.
