The Koh Phangan Fullmoon Party started out as a rather small affair that was enjoyed by only some 20 to 30 travelers. Improvised in 1985, this Thailand bash on the island of Koh Phangan now attracts upwards of 30,000 revelers. Partygoers, many of whom can be seen sipping from strong alcohol concoctions that are known as "buckets," take part in what amounts to one of the world’s largest and most hedonistic beach parties. DJ’s are in place to provide pulsating rhythms, and the resident beach bars play anything from psychedelic and house music to reggae and R&B. Drug use is common, though it is important to note that drugs are illegal in Thailand. Generally speaking, the monthly Koh Phangan Fullmoon Party takes place on nights when there is a full moon. There are times, however, when the dates are adjusted around Buddhist holidays. Either way, the festivities continue well into the night and into the following day. The center of the action is Sunrise Beach in Haad Rin. This beach is also known as Haad Rin Nok.

The Koh Phangan hotels include mostly guesthouses and resorts and can fit a range of budgets. Many of the resorts offer bungalows, and depending on the hotel in question, the general facilities can include such things as a restaurant, a pool, and spa-like facilities. Some Koh Phangan hotels are located right on Sunrise Beach. Others can be found in more peaceful areas that are within walking distance of Sunrise Beach. These areas include the nearby beaches of Haad Rin Nai (Sunset Beach) and Haad Leela. For those who don’t mind staying further away, some hotels that are found on other parts of the island offer free transportation to the Fullmoon Party. Another option is staying at a hotel on the nearby island of Koh Samui and taking a ferry over for the party. Thailand travel packages that include the opportunity to partake in the Koh Phangan Fullmoon Party are available and tend to include accommodations. During the December to March high season, the Koh Phangan hotels are known to raise their rates considerably. They are also known to fill up fast, especially around the Full Moon Party.
