The islands of the Caribbean Sea make up an extensive archipelago in the far west of the Atlantic Ocean, between North and South America. Once you arrive at your tropical paradise here, getting around with a Caribbean rent a car can be quite an adventure! Cars services are available at most major airports and often can be arranged directly through your resort or hotel to make exploring the beaches and other attractions convenient and flexible. Options for Caribbean car rentals are numerous and include: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, EuropCar, Hertz, National, Payless, Thrifty, Island, and many privately owned local and regional companies.
You have to be 25 years old to rent a car in most destinations, although some Caribbean rent a car agencies allow the driver to be 21 (often with a surcharge). You will need a valid driver's license from your home country, and in many destinations an additional temporary permit available from the agency. Before you set out, make sure you are familiar with international traffic signs and local laws, and remember to drive on the left side of the road on the following islands: Anguilla, Antigua, The Bahamas, Barbados, The Cayman Islands, Dominica, Jamaica, St. Croix, St. John, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Thomas. Expect bumpy roads and higher prices (especially for more popular 4x4 models) on islands like Antigua, Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Curacao, and St. Lucia. On Aruba and the Cayman islands, the roads are much flatter and in great condition. Caribbean car rentals are extremely convenient in the Bahamas where agencies are available in most areas and your home license is all you need for up to three months. On some islands like Barbados, where airport car delivery can be very slow, you may want to take a taxi to your hotel and have a car arranged there. Several islands enjoy hundreds of miles of paved roads in excellent repair, like those on Dominica. On less developed islands like the Dominican Republic, be prepared for rough conditions, especially on secondary roads, and avoid night driving where lit roads are uncommon. Make sure you are fully aware of your insurance coverage wherever you decide to rent a car, and expect reasonable prices in most places to be accompanied by especially high insurance costs due to higher accident rates.
