Dollar Rent A Car is a member of Dollar-Thrifty Automotive Group, based out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The company was originally called "Dollar A Day Rent A Car," when it was founded in 1965 in Los Angeles, California. Today there are more than 647 Dollar car rental locations in 53 countries, with a significant presence in Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America, and over 358 in the United States and Canada. Dollar's philosophy has always been to provide the public with a combination of the best customer service at the most competitive prices possible.  In addition, they offer a wide range of business travel and vacation planning services, including an online travel partner program that allows you to simultaneously book airline and hotel reservations from major companies such as Southwest, Delta, Continental, Hawaiian, Aloha, Northwest and more. Another free program available is Dollar Express, which offers members loyalty perks like shorter lines at the counter, faster service, free days through Renter Rewards, and corporate discounts.

There are suburban and airport Dollar car rental locations in all major cities throughout the United States. The company primarily rents Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles within the United States, though some locations feature other popular brands, such as Mazda, Nissan, or Toyota. Popular models include: Chrysler 300, Pacifica and the Sebring sedan and convertible; Dodge Caliber, Stratus, Magnum, Charger, Durango and Caravan minivans; and Jeep Liberty, Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. At the majority of Dollar locations a hand-held computerized check-in system is used, resulting in extremely quick rental car returns.

To be eligible for a Dollar rent a car you must be at least 21 years of age (except government workers on official business), and renters under the age of 25 will be subject to a daily surcharge. Outside the US, minimum and maximum rental ages vary by country. As a general rule, a major credit card is required at the time of rental, however, when you may be allowed to use a debit or check card to rent in many US locations.
