The Middle East encompasses the intersection of Europe, Asia, and Africa, in an area rich with culture, religion, and history. While making your way around this region, your best option for travel may be a Middle East rent a car. In an area where public transportation can be crowded and uncomfortable, and taxi service is often unreliable, Middle East car rentals can provide flexibility and security. Rental agencies can be found at airports like Dubai International, the largest hub in the region, in most major cities, and near popular tourist destinations. Vendors include Payless, Avis, Dollar, Hertz, National, Advantage, Europcar, Alamo, Budget, Sixt, and Thrifty, as well as many smaller regional companies.

The Middle East is very diverse, and local laws and road conditions can vary just as much from place to place as the people who live there. Modern cities like Dubai are notorious for terrible traffic, confusing and congested downtown routes, and aggressive drivers, resulting in the highest accident death rate in the world. Israel, in contrast, is considered to be a very safe place to drive and navigate around. Driver requirements for a Middle East rent a car can therefore differ greatly from city to city.  Throughout the Middle East, you may encounter signs written only in the local language (Arabic, Hebrew, or Farsi), as well as international road signs or signs in several languages. Plan your trip carefully before you set out and make sure you understand what to expect along the way. 

When driving outside of major urban areas, make sure you have reliable insurance, in case of accident or breakdown. Check to see if your credit card covers you before purchasing additional collision coverage or roadside assistance, but don't risk heading out without it. Middle East car rentals outside of Dubai and Tel Aviv are very reasonably priced, but insurance can be costly and you may be required to pay a deductible up front (to be refunded after you return the car undamaged). Always check State Department warnings for Americans traveling in areas of unrest before you plan your trip. Ask the car rental agency for advice on driving defensively before you set off, and stay aware of your surroundings. Be familiar with local laws and customs (such as laws against women driving in Saudi Arabia), especially in areas with strict religious guidelines.
