The city of Pierre is the capital of South Dakota and the county seat of Hughes County. Founded in 1880 on the Missouri River opposite Fort Pierre, it was chosen as the capital city because of its location in the geographic center of the state. This central location makes it a great base for exploring South Dakota, but long distances between popular attractions means a Pierre rent a car is your best bet for getting around. Look for great deals on Pierre car rentals and save time and money to visit popular destinations like the capitol building, Ft. Pierre, Oahe Dam, the Fighting Stallions, and the memorial statues of soldiers near Capitol Lake. The area is also a popular destination for hunting, fishing, and reliving history along the historic Lewis and Clark Trail.

Pierre car rentals are available downtown (usually for better rates than those at the airport) from Budget and smaller local vendors. The city is served by Pierre Regional Airport (PIR), offering non-stop flights to Denver, Watertown, and Brookings, with continuing service to Minneapolis-St. Paul from Watertown. If you fly in here, car rentals are available in terminal from Avis and Budget. Try Budget for the lowest rates.

You must present a valid driver's license and credit card issued in your name at most Pierre rental car agencies (although some will take a cash deposit depending on a credit check), along with proof of insurance if you decline the vendor's coverage options. Usually age requirements for a rent a car are 21 for compact and economy cars, 25 for all others, and an additional young driver charge may apply for anyone under 25 (select agencies will rent to qualifying individuals over 18 for an additional fee).
