Puerto Rico is a tropical island in the Caribbean and a self governing US territory. A Puerto Rico rental car is the easiest and most convenient way to explore the island on your own schedule. Look for great deals on Puerto Rico car rentals and use your savings to enjoy horseback riding, golf, scuba diving, hiking through the rain forests, or just relaxing on the beautiful beaches.

Since Puerto Rico is a US territory, US citizens do not need a passport to travel between the island and the US, and foreigners have the same entry requirements for both destinations. Puerto Rico's main airport is Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), located in Carolina, near the capital city San Juan.  Puerto Rico car rentals available at SJU are offered by Enterprise, Payless, Thrifty, Dollar, Alamo, E-Z Rent a Car, National, Hertz, Budget, Advantage, and Avis. Try Enterprise for the lowest rates, followed by Payless and Thrifty. Many of the major agencies operate additional locations in the larger towns and near popular tourist attractions. There are also several smaller local vendors, many of whom offer lower rates than the bigger names and give discounts if you speak Spanish. Be sure to rent from a name you trust and always inspect the rental vehicle fully before driving off to protect yourself from being charged for pre-existing damages.

Driving in Puerto Rico is on the right-hand side of the road. The same driving rules apply here as in any part of the United States, except that the signs are in Spanish, the distance markers are noted in kilometers and fuel is sold in liters. You must present a valid unexpired US driver's license or International Driver's License to be eligible for a Puerto Rico rent a car for up to 120 days (after which time a local license will be required). Be prepared for congestion along scenic coastal highways, and rocky, narrow conditions along mountain routes. Proceed with caution and check to be sure your insurance covers any towing and roadside assistance fees before you set out. Ask the rental agency for directions and advice on road conditions as these can vary widely outside of more populated areas.
