Sacramento International Airport (SMF), formerly Sacramento Metropolitan Airport, is the main airport for Sacramento, located 15 minutes northwest of the central business district along Interstate 5. If you're flying in here, look for great deals on Sacramento Metropolitan Airport car rentals to get the most out of your trip. Whether the California capital is your final destination, or your first stop in the Central Valley, pick up a Sacramento Metropolitan Airport rent a car for maximum flexibility and convenience getting around.

SMF serves as a gateway to many Northern California destinations and major cities across the continental US, Hawaii, Mexico (with nonstop service to Guadalajara), and Canada. Flights are offered by 14 major carriers and one commuter airline, servicing over 10.4 million passengers a year. Southwest Airlines currently accounts for about half of all airline passenger traffic, but seven new air carriers were added after September 11, 2001, including Aloha, Mexicana, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, ExpressJet, and Air Canada. Seven on-site Sacramento Metropolitan Airport rent a car companies are available:  Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, and National, as well as shuttles to Payless outside the airport. Look for the lowest rates with Enterprise, Dollar, and Alamo. In addition to easily accessible car rentals, all indoor public areas feature free public wi-fi and both domestic terminals offer several restaurants and retail shops.

You must present a valid driver's license and credit card issued in your name at most rental car agencies, along with proof of insurance if you decline the vendor's coverage options. Usually age requirements are 21 for compact and economy cars, 25 for all others, and an additional young driver charge may apply for anyone under 25. All Sacramento Metropolitan Airport car rentals must be kept within California state lines with exceptions for Reno, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas, Nevada, after advance notification and approval from the rental company.
