Barbados Events

Barbados has many events all year round, ranging from Barbados jazz festivals to reggae festivals. People from all over Barbados and other countries head to Barbados festivals to celebrate the old sounds of jazz and reggae music, and to hear the new sounds coming from up and coming artists at the Barbados Reggae Festival and the Barbados Jazz Festival. If music isn’t your forte, you’ll still find plenty of Barbados festivals to suit your interests, such as sporting events and fishing competitions.

Barbados jazz festivals are perhaps the most well-known type of Barbados events. Every year in Bridgetown, the most famous local and international jazz performers hit the stage at the Barbados Jazz Festival. This internationally known festival has attracted the likes of Boney James and Lionel Richie. Prices for the concert range between an inexpensive 30 Barbados dollars all the way to 250 Barbados dollars. Although the concert always takes place in the capital city of Barbados, the location of the event changes from year to year. Some of the past venues include the Sunbury Plantation House and the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex. Although many visitors book tickets ahead of time for the best seat selection, it’s usually easy to get tickets at the gate on the day of the concert.

Besides the Barbados jazz festivals, the Oistins Fish Festival is a one of the most popular Barbados events. It takes place in the small fishing village of Oistins and the traditions of skilled fisherman who have been making their living fishing the sea for generations. This two day event consists of fishing competitions, crab racing, boat racing, and of course, eating plenty of fresh seafood. After participating in contest events, be sure to watch the arts and crafts demonstrations and sample rum at one of the many stores in the village. Like many Barbados festivals, the Oistins Fish Festival wraps up the days activities with live music.

Barbados is rich in Celtic culture. If you’re traveling to Barbados in May, be sure to stop by the Barbados Celtic festival which takes place at several locations on the island, including Bridgetown and Christ Church. Visitors can look forward to cultural demonstrations, dancing, and singing events that tell the story of life in the highlands. Even children can enjoy the event thanks to storytelling times and art activities geared towards children.

When most people think of Reggae music, they immediately think of the Caribbean island of Jamaica. While Jamaica certainly leads the reggae music scene, some great reggae music can be heard in Barbados. The Barbados Reggae festival is one of the largest reggae festivals in the Caribbean. Every year in April, dozens of reggae artists and thousands of fans gather in Bridgetown for nine days of Reggae music. The Barbados Reggae festival consists of a series of events, including the Reggae Beach Party, the Vintage Reggae Show and Boogie Night. The conclusion of the festival is highlighted by “Reggae on the Hill,” a live performance featuring the most well known artists in the present day Reggae scene. Some of the past performers include Dobby Dobson, the FAB 5 Band, and Boris Gardener. Whether you’re a fan of classic reggae, enjoy more modern sounds, or a combination of both, the Barbados Reggae Festival will be an impressive event.

Spending time at Barbados events and festivals will make any vacation memorable. Whether you like music, fishing, or sports, there is sure to be a Barbados festival to interest you.
