Melville Hall Airport

Melville Hall Airport is the major airport on the island of Dominica, located in the northeastern section of the island roughly 40 miles from the capital city of Roseau. After researching all the beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, and fascinating attractions in Dominica, practical research such as how to get to the island is the next step, and this is the primary destination for visitors looking to travel to Dominica. There is also a smaller airport, Canefield Airport, which is located three miles from the capital city. Alternatively, many visitors also arrive to this island in the Caribbean by cruise ship.

Some travelers complain that the Dominica Airport isn’t the easiest to get to. From the US, American Eagle flies directly to Melville Hall Airport. Travel to Dominica is easy from within the Caribbean, as local airlines connect nearby islands including Antigua, St Lucia, and Barbados. These destinations are typically easier to reach and then a connecting flight is available. The most popular local airline is LIAT. If you’re planning on travel to Dominica from Europe, both British Airways and Air France operate into neighboring islands and you can connect from there.

For some travelers, this roundabout way of arrival makes the Dominica Airport seem unattractive. However, adventurous travelers are certainly rewarded when it comes to the unspoiled features of the island. Escape Caribbean destinations with huge cookie-cutter resorts, and instead choose Dominica where you will find great hotels, beautiful beaches, and fantastic opportunities for scuba diving and hiking. Top attractions on the island include the Cabrits National Park, Morne Trois Pitons with its Boiling Lake, and Champagne, one of the best spots for snorkeling. While it may take a little more effort to travel to Dominica, the rewards once you arrive are substantial.

If you plan on doing some island hopping, one alternative to the Dominica Airport is to take a scenic ferry ride. Ferries connect Dominica to nearby Guadeloupe, Martinique, and St Lucia. There are several companies that operate a ferry service between the islands including Caribbean Spirit and L’Express des Iles. There are three main seaports on the island of Dominica: Woodbridge Bay, Roseau Ferry Terminal, and the Cruise Ship Berth. All of these seaports offer cruises and ferries that will provide a much different perspective of the beautiful island of Dominica then you will find on land.

It is easy to reach your hotel in Dominica from Melville Hall Airport with a taxi. Be sure to always look for uniformed taxis, and knowing your approximate fare before departure can come in handy. You can obtain this information from your hotel if they don’t offer a shuttle service, but in general, if you want to reach Roseau for example the fare will be around $26. Passports are required and there is a departure tax of almost $60 per American citizen. Once you have all these details figured out, you can sit back and relax in the beautiful atmosphere of the island of Dominica.
