Zona Colonial

The Zona Colonial is home in the capital city of Santo Domingo. This is where the Spanish civilization began in what is called the New World by Christopher Columbus and other explorers such as Ponce de Leon and Cortez. As you walk the cobblestone streets, you will walk in the same footsteps as these explorers along with pirates and even the colonists. The Zona Colonial Dominican Republic is a hot tourist spot that encompasses 12 blocks of the city. If you ever look at just one travel brochure, you will always remember the words “history comes alive here” and many of the tourists agree with this statement.

Throughout the week from Thursday until Sunday every night, you can enjoy the show at the Zona Colonial Santo Domingo with local music at the Parque Colon and the Plaza Espana. Along with the shows and the historical buildings, you can enjoy a horse and carriage ride that will take you throughout the entire area so you can see all the sights and decide what you wish to see while visiting the Zona Colonial.

Some of the fascinating attractions in the Zona Colonial Santo Domingo include the not only the unique cobblestone streets but some of the oldest buildings in all of the Caribbean. The Catedral Primada de America may be the oldest dating back to around 1514 and 1546. The ruins of the Monastery of San Francisco are another attraction that dates back to about the same time period. One Zona Colonial attraction that is always included in tours is the Alcazar de Colon. The Alcazar de Colon is a 22-room palace built by Christopher Columbus’s son Diego Columbus in 1510. There are also a variety of museums dotting the Zona Colonial well worth a visit including the Dominican Republic Museum of Modern Art, the Museo de las Casas Reales, and the Museo del Hombre Dominicano. The Christmas season offers an artisan’s fair and several live music concerts.

Not only will you enjoy all the attractions in the Zona Colonial in the Dominican Republic but your taste buds will have a vacation as well. You will enjoy the delightful local cuisine as some of the most popular restaurants in the area. The most popular restaurants in the Zona Colonial include the La Residencia close by the Plaza Espana. Here you will enjoy Mediterranean style food and wonderful service. The Bobos is another great restaurant home in Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo. Everyone will have his or her favorite dish from Vietnamese to Dominican served indoor or outdoors in the courtyard. At night, the restaurant transforms into a hot nightspot with international lounge music.

The Zona Colonial has something for everyone from history to delightful cuisine and is a must visit during your stay in Santo Domingo.
