Grenada Airport

Grenada airport is officially named Maurice Bishop International Airport and is the only facility in the nation to accept regularly scheduled commercial traffic from the United States. It is located on the southern tip of the main island within about five miles of the capital city and major beaches. The facility was named Point Salines International Airport until the spring of 2009, when it was renamed for the island country’s former prime minister who was deposed and slain in 1983 during the unrest following the 1979 revolution. This makes the Maurice Bishop International Airport part of the local history, as it was only three weeks later that the United States invaded the small Caribbean island nation.

Maurice Bishop International Airport is a small but modern facility with a runway long enough to accommodate international long-haul flights. There are facilities to exchange money, get tourism information, have a bite to eat, and do a small amount of duty-free shopping. Additionally, there are outlets to arrange for car rentals, including internationally known chains and some local companies. You will find a number of scuba outfitters, sightseeing boats, and yachts available in St Georges as well as on Grand Anse Beach.

Grenada airport transfers are easy and straightforward, as it is extremely close to the most populated area with the best beaches and the largest number of hotels The Grenada airport is so close, in fact, that you can walk to one of the island’s most popular beach bars and dining spots, located in the Maca Bana Villas complex on Magazine Beach. This exclusive little property boasts a full-service spa and only seven luxurious one and two-bedroom villas with fully equipped kitchens. This property allows you to enjoy the self-catering advantages of vacation rentals as well as the facilities and services of luxury hotels.

Grenada airport transfers can be arranged in advance as they can with many other of the island’s better hotels and resorts. You can even order ahead to have your preferred groceries stocked for your arrival.

In addition to car rentals and transfers arranged with hotels, Grenada airport transfers are available by taxis, and the rates are posted on boards outside the baggage claim area. The island is only about twenty miles long, and there are few hotels on the island’s northern tip where remote Lavera National Park is located. Taxi fares to just about anywhere you wish to go are quite reasonable.

The only other Grenada airport is located on little Carriacou Island. Like the island itself, Lauriston Airport is a tiny facility suitable only for private aircraft and short commuter flights. Most of the accommodation possibilities here are bed and breakfasts, some small hotels, and a wide variety of vacation rentals. Once you arrive, there are a couple car rental firms and a small fleet of taxis. You can also arrange transfers with the place you are staying. If you miss the flight to Carriacou, there are always regularly scheduled ferries and water taxis. There is no airport on little Petite Martinique Island; the only way to get here is by water. Boating is, in fact, one of the best ways to travel to these two inhabited islands and the many uninhabited outer islands.
