Once you arrive at the port in Ocho Rios, the first things you may notice is the colors—the blue skies and Caribbean waters contrasted by the emerald green of the sugar cane fields and the rainforest. Of all of the options for shore excursions, a visit to Dunn’s River falls is the one that you must do. The 600-foot tumbling waterfall is one of many in Jamaica, but it might be the island’s most famous. You can do more than just watch the scenery; the climbing experience here is really something to experience. This is just the beginnings of the options for Jamaica shore excursions in Ocho Rios. You’ll also have the chance to tour a coffee plantation and soak in the sun at James Bond Beach. This is the very island that inspired author Ian Fleming to write many of the spy novels featuring the famous spy. His home has now been transformed into a resort, and the residence of his friend, playwright Noel Coward, is open to tour.

For some travelers, Montego Bay is one of the many destinations they’ll visit on the island. For others, it’s the only place they’ll see. Either way, once you arrive at this port of call, your options for Jamaica shore excursions go far beyond the white-sand beaches. Some of the country’s finest restaurants and stores are located in Montego Bay. You’ll also have the chance to shop for locally made crafts at the city’s outdoor markets and visit Greenwood Great House, the home of the Barrett family. Edward Moulton Barrett was was one of the earliest and most successful landowners on the island. His great-granddaughter is the English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Several of the old sugar plantations remain open for tours as well. The north shore of Jamaica also is a great place to connect with nature. At the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary, you might even have hummingbirds eating right out of your hand. The Jamaican doctor birds are eager to dine on the sugar water the guests have prepared for them.

Falmouth Shore Excursions

For decades, Falmouth was just a quiet little fishing village in the Trelawny Parish. That all changed in 2011 when the new cruise ship terminal opened. On Jamaica shore excursions, you’ll quickly find that the city hasn’t lost its historic charm. The shopping village that was built alongside the terminal was designed with Georgian-style architecture to match the historic buildings in town. Many cruise ship passengers hop aboard a trolley tour to learn more about the history of Falmouth. You’ll also have to chance to visit a rum plantation where you can see how the spirit is made, following by a tasting session and lunch overlooking the sugar cane fields. As you’d expect for a Caribbean destination, fantastic beaches and water sports are in plentiful supply here too.

When planning your shore excursions, it’s a snap to find an experience to fit your interests. If you’re really into Bob Marley, a small town near Ocho Rios is the place you need to visit. Nine Mile is both the birthplace and the final resting place of the Reggae legend. Many music fans make the trip to Nine Mile (pictured) to pay their final respects and see the museum in his honor. In Montego Bay, the Bob Marley Experience & Theatre plays a movie on the legend’s too-short life and has a great gift shop filled with Marley memorabilia.

For those interested in adventure, it’s easy to find it along the northern shores of Jamaica. The rich canopies of the rainforest are perfect for a zipline tour. The views from the top of the canopy are not duplicated at lower elevations. The views from the water also are amazing on these Jamaica shore excursions. Rafting is especially popular for those on shore leave, and you don’t even need to be an expert to get started. The same goes for deep-sea fishing. A local company can get all the gear and guides together; all you need to do is sit back and cast a line.
