Montego Bay Attractions

The main Montego Bay attractions are the beaches. That being said, spending time on an idyllic strip of sand isn’t the only way to stay busy on a Montego Bay escape. Thanks to its nature as a major commercial center, this resort town is a great place to do some shopping, and it should be noted that both golf courses and tennis courts are in good supply. This is just the start when it comes to the list of things to do in Montego Bay, and thanks to the healthy nightlife scene, the fun doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down.

Some wonderful Jamaica beaches call the Montego Bay area home. Among them is world-famous Doctor’s Cave Beach. Found along Gloucester Avenue, this beach basically caters to everyone, which is why it is often crowded. If you prefer a more subdued beach experience, nearby Cornwall Beach is usually less crowded than Doctor’s Cave Beach. There’s also the Rose Hall Beach Club, which is set on a relatively secluded beach. Excellent facilities await at these renowned beaches, and while there are admission fees, the prices are more than reasonable.

Rose Hall Great House

Of all the "Great Houses" in Jamaica, none is more famous than Rose Hall. A stately Georgian mansion, it was built between the years of 1778 and 1790 for a wealthy planter from Great Britain. Contributing largely to the mansion’s fame is the story of Annie Palmer. This former Rose Hall resident married the builder’s grandnephew and supposedly dabbled in voodoo and withcraft. According to legend, Annie Palmer took many different lovers, slaves included, and when she got bored with them, she killed them off. In general, she terrorized the plantation population, though it is hard to say just how much of Annie’s story is based in fact. In the 1960s, the Rose Hall Great House was restored to its original glory, and it is now home to a bar and restaurant. You can find the home approximately nine miles east of Montego Bay, and admission fees apply should you wish to take a tour.

Several interesting plantations once operated in the Montego Bay area. In addition to the Rose Hall Plantation, they include the Greenwood Plantation. The main attraction at the Greenwood Plantation is the Greenwood Great House. It was built in the late 1700's and originally served as the residence for a cousin of the famous poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Today, it is a museum of sorts, displaying such things as oil paintings of the Barrett family and rare musical instruments. Also worth considering if you wish to visit a plantation during your Montego Bay vacation are the Croydon Plantation tours. These tours allow visitors to get insight into the operations of a working plantation, and the surrounding Catadupa Mountains scenery is quite splendid. A meal is included in the tour price, and guests are almost always picked-up and dropped-off at their Montego Bay hotels.

Aquasol Theme Park

If you find yourself looking for fun things to do in Montego Bay, you might wander over to the Aquasol Theme Park. In addition to offering a beach, this entertainment compound of sorts boasts a watersports kiosk, a bar that doubles as a dance club, a restaurant, a go-kart track, tennis courts, and a host of other things that can be of interest. Both locals and tourists alike are known to frequent the Aquasol Theme Park, and it can certainly make for an interesting place to spend at least a couple hours.

Montego Bay Nightlife

Montego Bay might not be the nightlife hot spot that Negril is, but visitors should find that the options for things to do once the sun goes down are quite sufficient. For starters, many of the Montego Bay resorts offer nightly entertainment, not to mention bars and clubs. Between these bars and clubs and those that are not affiliated with a hotel, there are atmospheres to suit a variety of tastes. You can hangout at a sports bar or an English-style pub, for example, and there is at least one funky beach bar in the area. Dancing the night away at a nightclub is also an option, and weekend nights at the Aquasol Theme Park are usually quite busy.

Montego Bay Boat Tours

Boats figure prominently in many Jamaica activities, and they are in good supply in Montego Bay. There are reggae catamaran cruises where, for about three hours, you can stuff yourself with delicious seafood, drink Red Stripe beer and rum cocktails, and rock out to reggae music. There are romantic sunset cruises, which take advantage of one of the most popular island attractions - the light on the sea as the sun sets. You can also take glass bottom boat tours where you can view the underwater delights while staying dry, or hop overboard for little snorkeling. Less traditional "boat tours" include kayaking and whitewater rafting.
