Arima Hotels

Once you leave the immediate environs of the capital city of Port of Spain, the choices for hotels on the island of Trinidad become pretty sparse. Such is the case when it comes to the Arima hotels. The town of Arima might be the main town and transportation hub in northcentral Trinidad, but because it is not a touristy place, it simply doesn’t abound with many lodging choices. That doesn’t mean that you can’t find Arima lodging, however, and the town merits a visit, especially during the Santa Rosa Festival, which takes place the last week of August. Should you visit during this festival, you might find that securing a room in one of the Arima hotels will prove more difficult, partly because of the lack of options. Booking ahead is always recommended regardless of the time of year should you be looking to stay at the ASA Wright Nature Center and Lodge, which is the best hotel in Arima Trinidad for those who want to stay close to nature.

Like most of your limited choices for Arima lodging, the Asa Wright Nature Center and Lodge is not actually found in town. It is within easy reach, however, as it’s just 7 miles away to the north. Birdwatching enthusiasts are among the more common guests at this nature lodge, while it’s also ideal for those who want to do some hiking or learn about tropical ecology. You’re situated at an altitude of about 1,200 feet when you stay at this lodge in the Northern Range mountains, and the surrounding flora and fauna are in rich abundance. There are some 400 birds, 97 mammal species, and more than 2,000 different kinds of flowering plants on the center’s grounds, and that’s not even the extent of it. It’s hard to find anywhere else in the Caribbean that can match the natural diversity of this place. Birdwatchers around the world know about the Asa Nature Center and Lodge, and besides coming to see the rare oilbirds, you can also spot hummingbirds, squirrel cuckoos, toucans, and parrots, among other avian species. The nature lodge here is pretty simple, to say the least, but folks don’t come to linger around in a hotel room. They come to birdwatch, relax, hike, and perhaps enjoy tours to other parts of the island on the side. There are 2 rooms in the main house, though you’ll find more privacy if you stay in one of the 21 wood cottages. Some might prefer the main house rooms, as they do boast a more appealing decor, not to mention 2 king-size beds. The cottages have twin beds, but do feature small verandas. Wi-Fi internet access is available, and there are safes and ceiling fans in each unit. There is a kitchen and dining room at the lodge, and your meals are included in your fee. When you’re not enjoying guided tours of the grounds or birding to your heart’s content, you can also take a refreshing dip in the lodge’s stream-fed grotto pool.

About the only accommodation choice in Arima proper is the Chateau Guillaumme Bed and Breakfast. There are only 4 units available at this small B&B/guest house, and while the units are rather basic, they are clean, comfortable, and pretty good on amenities. The rates are hard to argue with, so if it’s a cheap accommodation in Arima that you want, the Chateau Guillaumme is an excellent choice. Each guest unit here features cable TV, air conditioning, a clock radio, free coffee and tea, and a private bathroom. You can rent a cell phone if you think you’ll need one, and you can also book area tours and airport transfers with the help of the hotel’s friendly owners and staff. A complimentary breakfast is included in the low rates, and you’re never too far from a beach, some hiking trails, and so much more when you make the Chateau Guillaumme B&B your cheap accommodation in Arima. With the money that you save on room price, you’ll have more left over for things like tours, shopping excursions, or dining experiences.

Because Arima is relatively close to the Piarco International Airport, which is Trinidad and Tobago’s main hub for flights, your choices for Arima hotels can extend to those found near the airport. Among the best hotels in this area is the Holiday Inn Express, which is just 5 minutes from the airport, and only 4.9 miles from Arima. Though not necessarily a cheap accommodation in Arima, this hotel does offer plenty for the fair price, and its convenient location close to Arima, the airport, and even Port of Spain makes for a good base. The rooms here are what you would expect at a Holiday Inn in the U.S., and they are spacious, clean, and definitely comfortable. Amenities include satellite cable TV, air conditioning, a coffee maker, a hair dryer, and an iron and ironing board. Wi-Fi internet access is available for a fee, though a continental breakfast is included in the room rates. There is no restaurant at this Arima lodging option, but there is a nearby mall with a food court. Other restaurants can be reached by car, taxi, or bus within a few minutes, and there are vending machines at the hotel with sandwich, snack, and drink items. Free airport shuttle transportation is provided to guests at the Holiday Inn Express at no extra charge.
