St Croix Golf Courses

If you are planning a vacation in the United States Virgin Islands and want to fit in a round of golf, the island of St Croix is a great place to consider. Two of the St Croix golf courses are enviable 18-hole stretches where you can truly enjoy a world-class experience. There is also a 9-hole course worth checking out if you don't have time for 18 or are looking for a more casual go at it. When it comes to golf in St Croix, the two main courses will likely meet and exceed your expectations. They are easily two of the top courses in all the Caribbean, so pack those clubs during your United States Virgin Islands vacation, and enjoy a round or more in paradise.

The Carambola Resort is where you will find the award-winning Carambola Golf Course. If you only have the time or money to play one of the St Croix golf courses, then this should arguably be your first choice. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., who is easily one of the best golf course designers in the history of the practice, so you can be sure that the layout is impressive and challenging. Golf Magazine saw fit to award the Carambola Golf Course a coveted Gold Medal, and Golf Digest gave it four stars, so that should help to give golfers an idea of what to expect. There are four different sets of tees at this course, so you can play the ones that best fit your game, and the fairways tend to be generous, so if you're hitting them straight, you should find the short stuff often. Should you head to the Carambola Golf Course, not only will you be enjoying some of the best golf in St Croix, but also proximity to one of the best St Croix beaches, Davis Bay Beach. It's important to note that you will want to book your tee time at least a day in advance at Carambola if you want to guarantee a tee time. Besides offering a clubhouse and a putting green, the Carambola Golf Course also features a driving range, a bar, a restaurant, and a pro shop.

The other 18-hole St Croix golf course is the Buccaneer Golf Course, which is found in the island's main city of Christiansted. The course was designed in 1973, and the designer, Bob Joyce, was a PGA professional, so the course presents a worthy challenge even for scratch golfers. Even though the Buccaneer Golf Course tops out at just 5,685 yards, you'll still need every club in the bag, so it certainly makes for fun golf in St Croix. There are shorter tees available if you want to cut down the yardage, and much like the Carambola Golf Course, you'll enjoy beautiful views throughout your round. Views of the Caribbean Sea can be enjoyed from 13 of the 18 holes at Buccaneer, so you might bring a camera. The view from the third hole is especially spectacular, as on a clear day you can see Christiansted to the west, Buck Island to the east, and the islands of St John and St Thomas to the north. The Buccanneer Golf Course has PGA professionals who can help you work on your swing, and preferred tee times are usually awarded to guests at the Buccaneer Hotel. If you are really serious about golf in St Croix, you can always book a stay at the hotel to enjoy a little bit of preference.

Alas, we come to the third option for golf in St Croix, which, as mentioned, is a 9-hole course. The Reef Golf Course is tucked away on the island's east end, and interestingly enough, this makes it the most eastern United States golf course. The Reef Golf Course enjoys a nice setting on Teague Bay, which is known for its tranquility, and the fairways here measure out at almost 3,000 yards, so you can definitely pull out the driver here and there. If your game isn't falling into place on this beautiful St Croix golf course, you can always enjoy the sea views, which are quite nice. The Reef Golf Course might not be the best St Croix golf course for serious golfers, but if you're interested in a casual affair, then it's probably ideal. That's not to say the course isn't challenging, however, so you might want to hit the on-site driving range before you tee off. The rates are very agreeable at the Reef Golf Course, even with a cart, and the pro shop has a nice array of products, which helps to make for a nice overall experience. If golf isn't your thing, or if you simply love sports of all kinds, there are two nice tennis courts at the Reef that can be rented by the hour.
