Carribean Beaches

For many travellers, their mental image of islands like Barbados and Antigua is one of Carribean beaches, where the calm blue water of the ocean laps gently at the white sand, and where palm trees lining the beachfront offer a welcome shade away from the hot midday sun.

Carribean Beaches

This image has been cultivated by years of television shows that portray the Carribean as a predominantly beach destination, and for many visitors to the islands, this is completely true.

The Carribean beaches are some of the most beautiful anywhere. They are generally exactly as you would expect, white sand, clear blue water, and gentle breezes. The sea is safe enough for young children to play in, and if you are staying at a good hotel, there is nothing to stop you from simply lying back on a comfortable sun-lounger, enjoying an occasional drink from the waiters, and soaking up the sun all day.

Of course there is far more than just the stunning Carribean beaches available on the islands. Jamaica’s rich history means that there are well preserved plantation houses, the imposing Port Jesus, and Dunn River Falls to explore. Cuba has the crumbling city of Havana, while on the islands of the Bahamas; you can enjoy the legendary hospitality of the Atlantis Resort on the aptly named Paradise Island. Even smaller islands like Antigua have plenty to offer away from the beach including annual carnivals, and small pockets of jungle inland.

There is also the sea. While many people are perfectly satisfied by lying back on the Carribean beaches and looking at the slow moving waves on the surface of the clear blue ocean, other people take the opportunity of having such safe ocean in front of them and try out water sports during their vacation.

Wind surfing is a particularly popular option for holiday makers to enjoy. At the north and south ends of islands in the Eastern Carribean where the winds of the Atlantic mix with the calm and warmer air of the Carribean, there is excellent wind surfing, and in the south of the region, Margarita Island off the coast of Venezuela is recognized as one of the best wind surfing destinations in the world.

If lying on the Carribean beaches is not enough for you, there are plenty of exciting activities available on most islands including deep sea fishing for marlin and sword fish on a day long boat trip, and SCUBA diving. The clear waters of the Carribean with their wealth of sea life are ideal for beginners and experts alike, and offer plenty of challenges and rewards for anyone that wants to explore beneath the waves.

Carribean beaches may be the place where most people spend their holiday in the region, but they are also the point where the land meets the sea, and where it is most obvious about the many different sides there are to the region, the relaxation, excitement, and luxury that make the Carribean such a great place for a memorable holiday.
