Arenal Volcano Facts

There are a variety of interesting Arenal Volcano facts to consider. One of the most fascinating relate’s to the volcano’s recent active streak. In 1968, it erupted unexpectedly after 400 inactive years. Three towns were wiped out. The eruptive activity didn’t stop there, however. Over the next 42 years, the Arenal Volcano continued to spew ash, gas and lava on a steady, less damaging basis. This long eruptive period came to an end in 2010.

When it comes to Arenal Volcano history, it is interesting to note that the natural landmark was formerly the most active volcano in Costa Rica. October 2010 was when it lost this designation. The approximately 7,000-year-old Arenal is now going through a resting phase, so visitors are no longer treated to near daily eruptive activity shows. Thanks in part to the volcano’s conical shape and the fact that it rises to an elevation of 5,437 feet, it is still a sight to behold nonetheless. Many of the best views can be enjoyed while boating on Lake Arenal, and there are numerous vantage points of considerable quality throughout the general area.

The Arenal Volcano is a stratovolcano. It can be found in northwestern Costa Rica. The Alajuela province is the more exact location, and for sake of reference, the Costa Rican capital city of San Jose is approximately 90 miles to the southeast. Surrounding the volcano are the lands of the Arenal Volcano National Park and those of the larger Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area. The area in general is a tourist’s delight. A variety of fun Arenal tours can be arranged for those who wish to take advantage, and there are some very enticing Arenal Volcano hotels to select from.

It is worth noting that the Arenal Volcano is still an active volcano. You might say that it is merely sleeping at the moment. There is no telling when it will come back to life, though it surely will one day.
