Island hopping by ferry is great but between Athens and Crete I would reconsider. The ferry ride from Athens to Crete takes around 7 hours, and that's on a fast ferry. If you can afford I'd suggest flying via the Sky Express (local Cretan airline). You can easily do this from Athens to Chania and save you a lot of time. If you do want to experience the ferry, while in Crete you can catch the ferry to the island of Santorini, which is about 2 hrs away.

Actually it takes 12 hrs from Athens to Crete, but it's not all that bad as the ferry boats have restaurants and bars, videos on TV in the lounges and comfortable cabins. The ferries to Crete are to your far right when you get off the metro in Pireaus and face the harbor. You can walk or take the free shuttle which goes back and forth along the dock. There are signs that point the way too.
