If you're planning a vacation to Hawaii and whale watching is on the agenda, you can expect to see whales moving into the warm Hawaiian waters beginning in late November through December with February to March being the peak times. Around April-May, they head out, so make your plans for a whale watching tour during the prime season.

Peak time is late February and early March but you can whale watch as early as late November/December. I suggest staying in either Maui (Honokowai) or the Big Island (Kona) as they're good locations for watching from the beach or balcony.

A great place to view humpback whales on Maui is between West Maui, Lanai, and Molokai. On Kauai, you can easily whale watch from Poipu Beach, Kilauea Lighthouse and the Na Pali Coast's Kalalau Trail. On the Big Island, I would say Kohala coast, Hilo Bay and Pu'ukohola Site (near Kawaihae Harbor)
