I am wondering about buying the Japan Rail Pass in Japan. Does anyone know how to get the JR Pass, what you can do with it and what you can't do with it?

First and foremost, you can't buy a Japan Rail Pass in Japan so, you'll need to buy before you leave to Japan. You basically buy it online and you will be given a voucher which needs to be exchanged for the railpass itself in Japan any time within the following three months.

If you're planning to do a lot of travel from city to city in Japan, the Japan Rail Pass can save you money over normal tickets. You can basically buy the JR Pass for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days with unlimited travel on the national Japan Railways, and the good thing is that you can also use overnight sleeping-car trains with a Japan Rail Pass.

Be also in the know that the Japan Rail Pass only covers the Japan Railways (JR) Group.
