I know it's great exploring a new destination by car, but my advise for Sri Lanka is not to bother with car rental. Instead, hire a local driver to get used to the place especially when staying in Colombo, Negombo, Kandy or Galle. Outside of this places, the driving isn't as chaotic but even then who really wants to worry about driving in such beautiful place such as Sri Lanka?

I couldn't agree more! Driving conditions have deteriorated in Sri Lanka and traffic on the road has increased so much that you will get seriously stressed out...on holiday do you really want this kinda of hassle? I think not. Like the original poster says, hire a local driver and leave the driving to won't regret it.

when hiring a car be sure to first take a look a the vehicle before you part with your money. Many of the car hires there are in really poor condition (i.e. no seatbelts, broken lights, etc). Also, you shouldn't pay more than US$60 (7000 Rupees) a day.
