Flying from Chicago (ORD) to Copenhagen (CPH) can be done directly or with layovers. Non-stop flights are no doubt cheaper and can be done via London Heathrow Airport (LHR) on British Airways. However, if you want to avoid a connection in LHR, and save you some hassle it's best you fly directly with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), which is the only airline that fly non-stop from ORD to CPH.

I did this trip from Seattle and choice was SAS, though I could have chosen Lufthansa too. I flew SAS from Seattle to Chicago and onto Copenhagen a couple of years back before SAS stopped doing their direct flights from Seattle to Copenhagen, which was a shame.

    SAS review

I've flown with SAS before to Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo and every-time had a good experience. Mind you though that SAS is a low-cost no-frills airline so they dont offer free food, drinks, or baggage transfers. Therefore, keep that in mind when booking.
