If you plan to visit Peru, you must certainly add to your itinerary a trek along the Colca Canyon even if you plan on doing the Inca Trail. Why? Well, the Colca Canyon is the world’s second deepest canyon. Also, I would suggest doing the Colca Canyon trek as a test run for the Inca Trail. You can do this trek by yourself but it's probably best hiring a guide in Arequipa. Organized aren't that expensive because of the competition among the tour companies.

Having done several tours in Peru, I can tell you that going via the local route staying away from the tourist trail is the best. It may not be for everyone, but you have more freedom in your itinerary and you are in contact with local people. Local people also benefit economically, and that's always a plus.

    when to travel to Peru

Trekking in Peru is great but you really need to prepare yourself for the altitude well. Spend at least 3-4 days in Cusco (12,000ft high) to get used to it. Also, choose the right month to go like May thru September to avoid the huge crowds of tourists. It's also cheaper to travel to Peru then.
