this what i do when i go skiing or hiking in the cold. I wear wool base top layers as well as arm and leg warmers Then a good quality rain jacket and rain over-jacket trousers. I'm not really big on thermal tops like polypropylene but many folks use them. Bottom line, you want to wear gear that is comfy. Wool is still for me the best material for cold...just ask sheep;)

what do you do to combat cold?

In cold weather not only you wanna keep warm but also dry. hence the need for a base layer of long johns and a long-sleeved t-shirt. Nothing makes you colder more quickly than wet cloth against your skin. Woollen base layers aren't really best for keeping you dry but you can wear them for longer without smelling so bad.

Basically you want wicking materials..in order words, clothes that take away the moisture from your skin. Thats the problem with doing activities in the cold. You start to sweat and then that hot sweat becomes cold...horrible!
