July 4 is easily the best time to be in Gettysburg, though it's no doubt the busiest time of the year. My recommendation if you are planning a day trip to Gettysburg is to skip the reenactment and go to the Visitors center, Cyclorama and Battlefield. The reenactment will take up precious time that you could use better. Also, do take a bus tour, hire a car guide (well in advance) to give you a tour in your car, or rent an audio tour to make the most of the experience there.

No matter when you're there, be sure to start early in the morning or in late afternoon or early evening because you'll encounter fewer people and also you'll be on the battlefields at ideal times for photos.

You cannot miss Gettysburg anniversary battle reenactment if you're a history buff because you will see spectacular battle reenactments, field demonstrations, a large living history village, living history activities Tents, etc, etc; you will learn tons about civil war medicine, music, weapons, etc, etc.
