Macau's mid-year dragon boat festival will be extended by a day this year to cater for two new races as organisers prepare for the international championships in 2010.

The races are each year held during the Dragon Boat Festival, or Tuen Ng which will this year be staged over two weekends at the Nam Van Lake, beginning May 31.

Yesterday a preliminary draw was held for heats and lane placings. The exact origin of the festival is unclear, however one version has it that it sprang out of the actions of imperial poet Wat Yuen (Third Century BC), who threw himself into a river because of his disgust at the decadence and corruption in the kingdom. In total more than 50 Macau teams will compete in this year's festival.
