we'd like to explore Bolivia by ourselves and we're wondering if bus is the best and cheapest way to do this...is it possible to reserve bus tickets in advance? Also, what's the difference between internacionales and regionales buses..any ideas

As far as I know, you can't reserve bus tickets days in advance, though you can call in advance for pricing and route schedules and book your tickets on the same day. So I guess if you bought your ticket early on the day for traveling later in the day you could call that advance.

Internacionales bus lines mean these buses run international or national routes between Bolivia's 9 departments, while Regionales are buses which run regionally or within one of Bolivia's departments.

Since you want to travel on your own and not with an organized tour, you're best bet is to ask a taxi company or Bolivian travel agency about the small buses that locals use to travel since these buses and bus stops aren't advertised anywhere online.
