One great thing I suggest doing while in Asuncion is hiring a minivan with guide and visit the towns surrounding Asuncion. An organized tour such as this is actually very cheap (around $30) and includes lunch.

I enjoyed watching the changing of guard at the Panteon de los Heroes and seeing the stunning Presidential Palace. I agree it's a good idea to explore outside the city itself and head to places like Mbatovi ecological reserve for some jungle trekking.

The little towns really give you a feel of the true Paraguay. If you plan yo visit the Jesuit museum, stop by San Ignacio town which is located between Encarnacion and Asuncion. There’s not much to see in the town but it’s pleasant to wander around and enjoy being the only tourists.
