If you are traveling to Costa Rica looking to do tons of activities you are in luck as there's plenty to do: zip lining, rafting, horseback riding, hiking in the rainforest, etc. If you plan on staying in San Jose you should know that beaches are not close (about 2 hours away). As far as international airports, there are two: (SJO) Juan Santamaria International Airport and Liberia Airport (LIR). Neither of them are located in San Jose...the closest one to the capital is SJO, located in Alajuela (45 minutes away).

    Basing in San Jose

San Jose is probably the best place to base yourself if visiting for the first time, but don't expect to be wowed by the city. San Jose is little more than a commercial hub that lacks the centuries-old cathedrals but from there you begin a adventure to Poas volcano, Arenal forest or take a rafting trip to Reventazon or the Pacuare.

Costa Rica is a lovely place but it does get busy with tourists which is why I suggest traveling off season between late April andh November. It does rain during these months but it is less expensive and beaches are less crowded.
