what's transportation like in the islands? I presume you can rent a car, what about buses and taxis?

Getting around in Antigua and Barbuda isn't as difficult as it used a few years back, though transportation in Barbuda is notoriously known for being unreliable so take this into consideration.

Antigua in the other hand offers good car rental choices and you can easily arrange a car rental upon arrival at the airport. There is also buses to choose from, which are cheap, then again, that car rental is best in Antigua since it will give more freedom.

By the way, if you're planning on arranging rental transportation in Antigua and Barbuda you must first purchase a temporary drivers license that is valid for six months. The license is available at any local police station or car rental agency for a nominal fee.
