For all those of you wondering whether you need to rent a car or not when you arrive in Newport, the answer is no and yes. There is trolley service ($2.00 all day), taxi cab (~$7 cab fare to downtown) or car sharing options with zip car (cheaper than car rental) but to avoid hassle I'd still hire a car because the sights in Newport are all spread out.

Newport without a car is definitely doable since you can walk to many places including the beaches. However, if you travel to Newport you will want to visit Providence for sure so, you will definitely need some form of transport like car, taxi or shuttle bus but my favorite is bike rental or ferry. You can get the high-speed RIPTA ferry to Providence and ride around there for the day.

    use the RIPTA

Yep, forget car rental within Newport. The RIPTA allows you to explore Newport very easily as it provides trolley and bus service to attractions throughout Newport like the mansions, Cliff Walk, Beaches, Fort Adams, Downtown Newport, the Gateway Center, etc. You can buy a day pass or pay as they go directly from the bus driver.
