When checking for flights to Montana, I'd consider flying to Spokane (WA) and then take the overnight Empire Builder train to Whitefish. Whitefish is a great starting point for a vacation in Montana because of Glacier National Park, which it's in its backyard. If you do want to visit Yellowstone, I recommend stopping over in Paradise Valley.

Montana is best when you go off the beaten path. There are many ghost towns and cool things to be seen specially in the area of crystal park and Elkhorn hot springs, which is home to the town of Coolidge where you can see a giant Elkorn silver mine still standing. If you like driving, get a Gazette or Forest Service map and travel some of the thousands of miles of Forest Service roads.
