The 2011 Pan American Games open Friday, October 14, in Guadalajara. The event is drawing thousands of visitors to Mexico to watch more than 6,000 athletes compete in the games, which run through October 30. The city has been preparing for the crowds over the past year, with improvements such as newly paved roads and a new 8,500 seat stadium, and several new hotels. The Riu Plaza opened in June, while the Westin opened in September, and these and other new accommodations bring the total number of hotel rooms in Guadalajara to 22,000.

    Pan Am Games security

Im hoping for the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara to go smoothly because of all the negative criticism the city is getting regarding safety. To be honest, im not sure all the heavy-armed cops and Federal police patrol cars are having a positive effect in the city...from a tourists point of view that never sends the right message. I love Mexico, news need to stop talking about car-bombings, gang violence, random shootings and other stuff because Guadalajara isn't the only city in the northern hemisphere suffering from this:(
