Lahaina museums would be a good place to start since you're seriously interested in discovering Maui's heritage, and there is no better place like the Whalers Village Museum to start from. The Whalers Museum provides a glimpse of 19th century Lahaina as well as a re-created whaling ship forecastle, a large-scale model of a whaling ship, and a prized collection of scrimshaw, which are objects the whalers typically carved from baleen or whale ivory.
In Wailuku, the Bailey House Museum is a top draw for Maui museums since it used to be the home of a missionary family. The house itself is something special, complete with thick sandalwood beams and stone walls.
