Im looking for info on the mountains in California. We're looking at a trekking trip before Christmas... which are the two major mountain ranges in the state, what mountains have the highest elevation and which mountain would you recommend for going hiking?

The two major ranges of mountains in California are the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Ranges, though Sierra Nevada is the best place to enjoy a hiking trip. This range alone has some of the highest peaks in California such as Mount Whitney (14,491 ft) and Mount Shasta Volcano (14,440 ft), Mammoth Mountain is the most popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers because of the cool 7,800 ft elevation.

Be aware also that the first snowfall would have fallen already on the peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the snow will continue to fall heavily throughout the winter.
