yes, the area around Playa del Carmen has many Mayan ruin sites, which you can visit by yourself or with a tour operator, though hiring a tour guide is a god idea if you want to learn about the ruins.
The Mayan ruins near Playa del Carmen that are popular with tourists are the famous Chichen Itza ruins and Tulum ruins, though these ruins are expensive to get in and can get very crowded.
I'd suggest visiting other ruins such as Coba, Ek Balam and Xel Ha ruins if you are looking for reasonably priced ruin sites.
