im looking to fly into Johannesburg and travel overland on public transportation through Botswana to Lusaka, stopping along the way for a few days sightseeing. My questions are:

1)what are roads like in Botswana and Zambia?
    2) has anyone actually done the trip by bus from Johannesburg (if so, what bus companies)

    Many Thanks!

I've done this trip by bus from Johannesburg, and to be honest there isn't much to do between Johannesburg and Kasane when travelling by bus, though there is lots to see and in Kasane itself like visiting the Chobe National Park to see elephants, antelope giraffe, and warthogs.

As far as bus companies, Intercape runs daily buses between Johannesburg to Gabarone (Botswana). then from there, you'll need to catch another bus to Lusaka. Either way, buses aren't really very comfortable and it's quite a distance.

Alternatively, you can take a train from Johannesburg to Gaborone and then a bus to Kasane, and hitch across the border to Livingstone.
