I enjoy going to the track for horse racing and greyhound racing but I've never seen, nor heard, of reindeer races until today when I read about the upcoming Reindeer Championship Races held on ice-covered Lake Inari in Lapland. Anyone had an opportunity to take in the races?

Never taken part but got to see reindeers and their jockeys racing during the Reindeer Cup Championship Drivesin 2011 in Lapland. It was really cool to see that but it saddened me to learn that these racing reindeers are separated at birth from the mothers...after the championships, some of the reindeers go to the slaughterhouse, while others are kept for breeding.

    Reindeer Racing

Reindeer racing is very popular in Finland. If you travel during the Easter festivals to Rovaniemi or Levi, you can see them. I was amazed at how fast they can be...reindeer can run at a fast speed at more than 60kph. Btw, there are also reindeer sledge races, where the reindeer pulls a person on a sledge round a race circuit.
