Not sure if you already know but you should know that some parts of Route 66 are in remote areas, so make sure that you have extra food and water, just in case.
Also, in the western half of the route, gas stations and repair shops can be up to 90 miles apart, so you'll want to make sure your car is up for the drive..the last thing you want is break down on a really hot and lonely stretch!
There are basic motels along Route 66 which are really really basic so don't expect anything fancy. I'd suggest staying in a cheap hotel in either Flagstaff or Santa Fe.
